Addison's Disease:
This disorder is caused by hyposecretion (deficiency) of adrenal cortical hormones, particularly glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids (aldosterone), usually due to damage or atrophy of the adrenal cortex.
Symptoms include:
- Chronic muscular weakness and fatigue
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Low blood pressure (hypotension)
- Hyperpigmentation (bronzing/darkening) of the skin, due to increased ACTH (and related MSH-like activity) as the pituitary tries to compensate for low cortisol
- Disturbed electrolyte (Na+/K+) balance due to reduced aldosterone, which can lead to dehydration
Cushing's Syndrome:
This disorder is caused by hypersecretion (excess) of glucocorticoids, particularly cortisol, from the adrenal cortex (often due to a tumour of the adrenal cortex or excess ACTH stimulation from the pituitary).
Symptoms include:
- A rounded "moon face"
- Obesity of the trunk with a "buffalo hump" on the back, while the limbs remain relatively thin (muscle wasting)
- Thinning and weakening of the skin, with stretch marks …
