Bridges' Genic Balance Theory says sex in Drosophila depends on the ratio of X chromosomes to autosome sets (X:A): 1.0 = female, 0.5 = male, in-between = intersex.

Calvin Bridges put forward the Genic Balance Theory to explain sex determination in the fruit fly Drosophila (Principles of Inheritance and Variation, NCERT Class 12 Biology). Its central idea is that the Y chromosome plays no role in deciding sex (it is needed only for male fertility); instead sex is decided by a balance between female-determining genes on the X chromosome and male-determining genes on the autosomes.

This balance is expressed as the X : A ratio — the number of X chromosomes divided by the number of haploid sets of autosomes (A):

X chromosomesAutosome sets (A)X : A ratioSex
221.0Normal Female
120.5Normal Male
321.5Metafemale (super-female)
130.33Metamale (super-male)
230.67Intersex
