Amniocentesis is a prenatal test on amniotic-fluid foetal cells; it can detect chromosomal/genetic disorders such as Down's syndrome and haemophilia.

Amniocentesis is a foetal diagnostic method described in the Reproductive Health chapter of NCERT Class 12 Biology. A fine needle is used to draw a sample of the amniotic fluid that surrounds the foetus in the womb. The foetal cells and dissolved substances in this fluid are then examined — the cells are karyotyped (chromosomes studied) and tested biochemically.

Because it reveals the foetal chromosome pattern and certain metabolic defects, it can diagnose genetic and chromosomal disorders before birth, for example:

  • Down's syndrome (trisomy of chromosome 21)
  • Haemophilia (a sex-linked bleeding disorder)
  • (also Turner's syndrome, Klinefelter's syndrome, sickle-cell anaemia, and the sex of the foetus). …
