Four contrasts: blood is richer and red while lymph is colourless and cell-poor; open circulation bathes tissues in sinuses while closed keeps blood in vessels; systole is contraction while diastole is relaxation; and the P-wave is atrial excitation while the T-wave is ventricular recovery.

  1. Blood and Lymph. Both are body fluids, and lymph is in fact derived from blood, but they are not alike. Blood is red and carries the full complement of formed elements — erythrocytes, leucocytes and platelets — in a plasma rich with proteins. Lymph is colourless; it lacks red blood cells and platelets, and the cells it carries are mainly lymphocytes. It also holds less protein than blood, because the large plasma proteins cannot easily seep out of the capillaries into the tissue spaces from which lymph forms.
  2. Open and Closed system of circulation. In an open circulatory system, seen in arthropods and molluscs, the heart pumps blood into large vessels that open into spaces or body cavities called sinuses, so the blood directly bathes the tissues. In a closed circulatory system, seen in annelids and chordates, the blood pumped by the heart always remains within a closed network of vessels. The closed plan is considered more advantageous because, with the fluid confined to vessels, its flow can be regulated far more precisely. …
