We call the heart myogenic because the signal that makes it beat is generated by its own muscle tissue, not supplied by nerves from outside.

The word myogenic points to where the heartbeat comes from. In our heart the normal activity is auto-regulated by a specialised kind of cardiac musculature called nodal tissue. What makes this tissue remarkable is that it is autoexcitable — it can produce action potentials entirely on its own, without needing any signal from outside the heart.

Because the impulse for contraction is born within the heart's own muscle rather than being sent in by a nerve, the heart is said to be myogenic. This is the key contrast a student should hold on to: a myogenic heart starts its own beat from muscle, and does not wait for a nerve to command it. …
