Conditions for Growth
Several conditions are necessary for growth, and the most essential are water, oxygen and nutrients.
- Water — Plant cells grow in size largely by cell enlargement, which in turn requires water. The turgidity of cells helps in extension growth, so plant growth and further development are intimately linked to the water status of the plant. Water also provides the medium for the enzymatic activities needed for growth.
- Oxygen — Oxygen helps in releasing the metabolic energy that is essential for growth activities.
- Nutrients — Both macro- and micro-nutrients (the essential elements) are required by plants for the synthesis of protoplasm, and they also act as a source of energy. …
