Decomposition converts complex organic detritus into inorganic nutrients, closing the nutrient cycle and making essential elements available again to plants — without it, nutrients would remain locked in dead matter and ecosystems would collapse.

What is decomposition? It is the process by which decomposers (chiefly bacteria and fungi, also called saprotrophs) break down complex organic compounds present in detritus (dead plant/animal remains and excreta) into simpler inorganic substances such as CO2, water, and mineral nutrients. Major steps include fragmentation (detritivores breaking detritus into smaller pieces), leaching (water-soluble nutrients seeping into the soil), catabolism (enzymatic breakdown of organic matter by microbes), humification (formation of dark, resistant humus), and mineralisation (release of inorganic nutrients from humus).
