Watson and Crick's double helix model describes DNA as two antiparallel, complementary strands coiled around each other, held together by base pairing. (OR: DNA replication copies each strand semiconservatively, with continuous leading-strand and discontinuous, ligase-joined lagging-strand synthesis.)

Watson-Crick double helix model of DNA (1953), described in place of a hand-drawn diagram:

  1. DNA is made of two polynucleotide chains, coiled around a common axis in a right-handed helix.
  2. The two strands are antiparallel - one runs in the 5' to 3' direction, the other in the 3' to 5' direction.
  3. The sugar-phosphate backbone lies on the outside of the helix, while the nitrogenous bases project inward, facing each other.
  4. The two strands are held together by hydrogen bonds between complementary base pairs: Adenine pairs with Thymine (A=T) via 2 hydrogen bonds, and Guanine pairs with Cytosine (G=C) via 3 hydrogen bonds - this base-pairing means the two strands are complementary to each other.
  5. The helix has a diameter of about 20 angstrom, with each turn of the helix measuring 34 angstrom and containing about 10 base pairs; adjacent bases are separated by roughly 3.4 angstrom.
  6. Because of the double-strand, complementary nature, the DNA can replicate itself accurately, each strand acting as a template for a new complementary strand (semiconservative replication), which is the structural basis for genetic inheritance.

OR alternative:

  1. Replication: the process by which a DNA molecule makes an identical copy of itself before cell division, so each daughter cell gets an exact copy of the genetic material. DNA replication is semiconservative - each of the two strands of the parent DNA acts as a template, and the new double helix formed has one parental (old) strand and one newly synthesised strand.
  2. Leading strand vs lagging strand:
  • The leading strand is synthesised continuously in the 5' to 3' direction, in the same direction as the movement of the replication fork. …
