Double fertilization, unique to flowering plants, involves two separate fusion events inside the embryo sac — syngamy (forming the zygote) and triple fusion (forming the endosperm) — both triggered by the delivery of two male gametes through the pollen tube.

What is double fertilization? After pollination, the pollen tube grows through the style and enters the ovule (usually through the micropyle), releasing its two non-motile male gametes into the embryo sac (this event is called syngamy for one and triple fusion for the other, together termed double fertilization since it involves two distinct fusion events). It was discovered by S. G. Nawaschin.

Process (with description of a diagram):

  1. The mature embryo sac contains, from the micropylar end: two synergids and one egg cell (together forming the egg apparatus), a large central cell with two polar nuclei, and three antipodal cells at the chalazal end.
  2. The pollen tube enters through one synergid, discharges its two male gametes into the cytoplasm of the degenerating synergid.
  3. Syngamy: One male gamete (n) fuses with the egg cell (n) to form the diploid (2n) zygote, which later develops into the embryo. …
