In reverse osmosis, applying excess pressure on the concentrated solution reverses the natural direction of osmotic solvent flow, pushing pure solvent out through the semipermeable membrane - the basis of modern water purification/desalination.

Normal osmosis: if a semipermeable membrane separates a pure solvent from a solution (or a dilute solution from a concentrated one), solvent molecules spontaneously flow from the pure-solvent (or dilute) side into the solution (concentrated) side, until equilibrium/osmotic pressure is reached.

Reverse osmosis: if a pressure GREATER than the osmotic pressure of the solution is applied on the solution side (from outside), the direction of solvent flow is REVERSED - pure solvent is now forced to flow OUT of the solution, through the semipermeable membrane, into the pure-solvent compartment, leaving the solutes/impurities behind.
