Two solutions are called isotonic if they exert the same osmotic pressure at the same temperature, so that no net flow of solvent occurs across a semipermeable membrane separating them.

When two solutions have equal osmotic pressure (π1 = π2) at the same temperature, placing them on either side of a semipermeable membrane causes no net osmosis — neither solution gains nor loses solvent, because water molecules move equally in both directions.
