Question of 165

Q.It is known, regarding the students of a school, that 70%70\% of the students study at a private coaching centre and 30%30\% do not study at a private coaching centre. From the details of last year's annual examination results, it is known that 35%35\% of the students who do NOT study at a private coaching centre obtained an A grade, and 25%25\% of the students who DO study at a private coaching centre obtained an A grade. At the end of the year, a student was selected at random from that school, and it was found that the student had obtained an A grade. Find the probability that the student is one who does not study at a private coaching centre.

This is a direct application of Bayes' theorem: we know the reverse conditional probabilities (A-grade given coaching status) and need to invert them given that an A grade was observed.

Let E1E_1 = student studies at private coaching (P(E1)=0.70P(E_1)=0.70), E2E_2 = student does NOT study at coaching (P(E2)=0.30P(E_2)=0.30).

Let AA = student got an A grade. Given: P(A∣E1)=0.25P(A\mid E_1)=0.25, P(A∣E2)=0.35P(A\mid E_2)=0.35.

Total probability of A grade:

P(A)=P(E1)P(A∣E1)+P(E2)P(A∣E2)=(0.70)(0.25)+(0.30)(0.35)=0.175+0.105=0.28P(A) = P(E_1)P(A\mid E_1)+P(E_2)P(A\mid E_2) = (0.70)(0.25)+(0.30)(0.35) = 0.175+0.105 = 0.28
