Applying Kirchhoff's laws to the Wheatstone bridge's loops, and imposing the null (balanced) condition that no current flows through the galvanometer, directly yields P/Q = R/S.

A Wheatstone bridge has four resistances P, Q, R, S arranged in a diamond (P and Q in one pair of arms, R and S in the other), a battery connected across one diagonal (through points A and C, say), and a galvanometer connected across the other diagonal (B and D). Let I be the main current from the battery, splitting into I1 (through P then R) and I2 (through Q then S), with Ig the galvanometer current through BD.

Applying Kirchhoff's junction rule at B and D, and the loop rule to the two loops ABDA and BCDB, with the balance condition imposed (bridge balanced ⇒ Ig = 0, so I1 flows through both P and R, and I2 flows through both Q and S):

Loop ABD (no current through galvanometer, so B and D are at the same potential when balanced):

I1P=I2QI_1 P = I_2 Q …
