Nuclear force is the strongest fundamental force, but it acts only over extremely short distances inside the nucleus.

The nuclear force is the attractive force that acts between nucleons (protons and neutrons) and holds them together within the tiny volume of the nucleus, despite the strong electrostatic (Coulomb) repulsion between the positively charged protons. Its key properties:

  • It is the strongest of the fundamental forces of nature (over nuclear distances), much stronger than the electromagnetic force.
