Two diodes take turns conducting -- one for each half of the AC cycle -- so the load always gets current in the same direction, producing a continuous train of pulses rather than gaps.

Circuit: A centre-tapped transformer secondary has its two ends connected to diodes D1 and D2, whose outputs are joined together and connected through the load resistor RLR_L back to the centre tap.

Working: During one half-cycle, the top end of the secondary is positive, so D1 conducts (forward biased) while D2 is reverse biased (blocked); current flows through RLR_L in one direction. During the next half-cycle the polarity reverses -- now D2 conducts while D1 is blocked, but because of the centre-tap symmetry, current STILL flows through RLR_L in the same direction as before.
