A single diode conducts only when forward biased (during one half of the AC cycle), so the output across the load is a train of positive half-sine pulses separated by zero-output gaps.

Circuit: The secondary of a step-down transformer is connected in series with a diode D and a load resistor RL. The AC input is applied across the transformer secondary + diode + RL loop; the output is taken across RL.

(secondary) RL Output (Vout)
            +------+

Working: During the positive half-cycle of the input, the diode is forward biased and conducts, so current flows through RL and a pulse (following the input's shape) appears across it. During the negative half-cycle, the diode is reverse biased and does not conduct, so no current flows and the output is zero.
