Differentiation is a cell maturing for a job; dedifferentiation is a mature cell regaining the ability to divide; redifferentiation is that reawakened tissue maturing all over again.

Differentiation. Cells derived from the root apical meristem, the shoot apical meristem or the cambium differentiate and mature so as to perform a specific function, undergoing a few to many structural changes in both their cell walls and their protoplasm along the way. A clear example is the formation of a tracheary element: the cell loses its protoplasm entirely and instead builds a strong, elastic, lignocellulosic secondary wall, fitting it perfectly to conduct water over long distances even under strong tension.

De-differentiation. Living differentiated cells that have already lost the capacity to divide can, under certain conditions, regain that capacity — this reversal is called de-differentiation. The interfascicular cambium and the cork cambium are both good examples: they form from fully differentiated parenchyma cells that have dedifferentiated back into dividing tissue. …
