Algae are grouped into three classes using five comparable features — pigments, stored food, cell wall, flagella, and habitat.

A single character is rarely enough to place an alga, because algae vary enormously in body form — from single cells and colonies like Volvox to filaments like Spirogyra and giant marine kelps. So classification rests on a combination of steady, comparable features that hold across these differences.

The characters that are used are:

  • Photosynthetic pigments — the dominant pigments give each class its typical colour. Green algae are dominated by chlorophyll a and b, brown algae add chlorophyll c with the brown pigment fucoxanthin, and red algae owe their colour to the abundant red pigment phycoerythrin.
  • Stored (reserve) food — the chemical form in which food is stored differs: starch in green algae, mannitol and laminarin in brown algae, and floridean starch in red algae.
  • Cell wall — its composition varies from cellulose alone, to cellulose coated with algin, to walls containing pectin and sulphated compounds.
  • Flagella — the number of flagella on the motile cells and where they are attached (apical or lateral), or their complete absence, is a reliable marker.
  • Habitat — whether the alga lives in fresh, brackish or salt water is also taken into account.
Note

Judged on these features, algae are divided into three classes: Chlorophyceae (green algae), Phaeophyceae (brown algae) and Rhodophyceae (red algae).

✓Final answer

In short, algae are classified on the basis of their pigments, stored food, cell-wall composition, the number and position of their flagella, and their habitat, which together separate them into the green, brown and red classes.
