The coordinates of a point are its perpendicular distances from the three coordinate planes (YZ, ZX and XY), each laid off on the respective axis.

What a Coordinate Really Measures

In space the three coordinate planes are the YZ-plane (x=0x=0), the ZX-plane (y=0y=0) and the XY-plane (z=0z=0). For a point P(x,y,z)P(x,y,z), each coordinate records how far PP is from one of these planes:

  1. The xx-coordinate is the perpendicular distance of PP from the YZ-plane, marked off along the xx-axis.
  2. The yy-coordinate is the perpendicular distance of PP from the ZX-plane, marked off along the yy-axis.
  3. The zz-coordinate is the perpendicular distance of PP from the XY-plane, marked off along the zz-axis.
