Substitute the given inputs into f(x)=x2+7f(x)=x^2+7 and g(x)=3x+5g(x)=3x+5: (a) 66, (b) 13634\dfrac{1363}{4}, (c) 1313, (d) t2−4t^2-4, (e) t+5t+5.

These are function-evaluation problems: apply each rule to its input, then perform the indicated operation.

(a) f(3)+g(−5)f(3)+g(-5)

f(3)=32+7=16,g(−5)=3(−5)+5=−10f(3)=3^2+7=16,\qquad g(-5)=3(-5)+5=-10

f(3)+g(−5)=16+(−10)=6f(3)+g(-5)=16+(-10)=6

(b) f(12)×g(14)f\left(\tfrac12\right)\times g(14)

f(12)=(12)2+7=14+7=294,g(14)=3(14)+5=47f\left(\tfrac12\right)=\left(\tfrac12\right)^2+7=\tfrac14+7=\tfrac{29}{4},\qquad g(14)=3(14)+5=47

f(12)×g(14)=294×47=13634f\left(\tfrac12\right)\times g(14)=\frac{29}{4}\times 47=\frac{1363}{4}

(c) f(−2)+g(−1)f(-2)+g(-1)

f(−2)=(−2)2+7=11,g(−1)=3(−1)+5=2f(-2)=(-2)^2+7=11,\qquad g(-1)=3(-1)+5=2 …
