Peel Raju's Rs 500 of daily takings down through depreciation, indirect tax, retained earnings and income tax: GDP Rs 500, NNP at market price Rs 450, NNP at factor cost Rs 420, Personal Income Rs 200, and Personal Disposable Income Rs 180.

Each successive measure of income strips one more item from the gross value Raju creates, so working through them in order shows exactly what each aggregate includes. His haircuts are a final service, so their value is his contribution to output.

  1. Gross Domestic Product — the market value of the final service produced =Rs 500= \text{Rs } 500.
  2. NNP at market price removes the capital consumed (depreciation): 500−50=450500 - 50 = 450. This is the net value added, still at the price customers pay.
  3. NNP at factor cost removes the net indirect tax (the Rs 30 sales tax, no subsidy): 450−30=420450 - 30 = 420. This is income measured by what the factors actually earn — Raju's factor income.
  4. Personal income removes the part of that factor income kept back in the business rather than paid out to Raju as a person — the Rs 220 he retains to buy new equipment (undistributed saving): 420−220=200420 - 220 = 200. This Rs 200 is exactly what he "takes home". …
