1.4.4 Objectives of Extramural Tournaments
Extramural tournaments are a popular and essential part of educational institutions and communities. Here a common team represents a school, college or group, taking part in — or hosting — various inter-institution competitions that engage children and youth and bring them a range of benefits. The main objectives of extramural tournaments are:
- High performance — to push players to reach the highest possible level of performance, since they now compete against the best teams of other institutions rather than only their own classmates.
- Integration with other institutions — to build a feeling of unity, goodwill and healthy rivalry between the different schools, colleges and communities that meet on the field.
- A career pathway in sport — to open up opportunities for talented students to be noticed and to choose a career in sports, as extramural events are where selectors and higher-level teams look for talent.
- Broader development through sport — to promote the social, cultural and economic development of the participants and their institutions through organised competition.
Because these objectives are pursued at progressively higher levels — Zonal, State, National and beyond — extramural sport becomes the main route through which school and college athletes move into competitive sport. This list of objectives is a standard short-answer topic in the CBSE Class 12 Physical Education examination.
Why these objectives differ from intramural objectives. Intramural objectives (section 1.4.1) centre on participation, values and a first taste of competition for the largest possible number of students inside one institution. Extramural objectives shift the focus outward and upward: only the institution's best-prepared players usually represent it, the standard of performance expected is far higher, and success brings recognition not just to the player but to the entire school or college. This is why "high performance" and "career pathway" appear here but not in the intramural list — they only make sense once a student is competing against outsiders for a place on a bigger stage. …
