Figure — The stem hard-requires a labelled diagram of a single antibody molecule; catalog fig-7-4 is the Y-shaped antib

An antibody is a Y-shaped H₂L₂ protein: two heavy + two light chains, with antigen-binding sites at the tips of the two arms.

Concept: An antibody (immunoglobulin, Ig) is a protein produced by B-lymphocytes/plasma cells in response to an antigen. Each antibody molecule is made of four polypeptide chains: two identical long Heavy (H) chains and two identical short Light (L) chains, giving the formula H₂L₂. It is Y-shaped.

Description of the labelled diagram (to be drawn as a 'Y'):

  • The two upper arms of the Y each consist of one light chain lying alongside part of a heavy chain.
  • The stem of the Y is formed by the lower halves of the two heavy chains.
  • Labels to mark:
    1. Heavy chains (H) — the two long chains forming the stem and inner part of the arms.
    2. Light chains (L) — the two short chains at the outer part of each arm.
    3. Antigen-binding sites — at the two tips of the arms (there are two per antibody).
    4. Variable region (V) — the tips of both H and L chains (differs between antibodies; binds antigen). …
