Flocs are clumps of bacteria and other microorganisms that form the working heart of biological sewage treatment, consuming organic pollutants and settling out to produce clean water.

Sewage treatment plants face a fundamental challenge: how do you remove dissolved and suspended organic matter from millions of litres of wastewater efficiently? The answer lies in harnessing the natural appetite of bacteria. But free-floating bacteria are too small and dispersed to be practical—they would simply flow out with the treated water. This is where flocs become indispensable.

Flocs are masses of bacteria held together in clusters, often associated with fungal filaments that act like a scaffold. These aren't random aggregations; they form naturally when certain aerobic bacteria grow in the presence of organic waste and oxygen. The bacteria secrete sticky extracellular substances that bind them into these visible, fluffy clumps. Think of flocs as living sponges, densely packed with microbial workers.

Their importance in biological treatment stems from three key properties:

  • Efficient degradation: The high concentration of bacteria within each floc means organic pollutants—proteins, carbohydrates, fats—are rapidly broken down. The bacteria use these as food, converting them into carbon dioxide, water, and more bacterial biomass through aerobic respiration.

  • Easy separation: Because flocs are much larger and denser than individual bacteria, they settle readily under gravity. After the bacteria have done their work in the aeration tank, the mixture moves to a settling tank where flocs sink to the bottom as activated sludge. The clear supernatant—now significantly cleaner—can be discharged or further treated. …
