DNA fingerprinting identifies people from their unique repetitive-DNA (VNTR) pattern; used in forensics, paternity tests and population studies.

DNA fingerprinting (developed by Alec Jeffreys) is a technique of identifying an individual on the basis of the unique pattern of certain repetitive, non-coding DNA sequences (variable number tandem repeats, VNTRs, present in satellite DNA). These repeats vary greatly in number from person to person, so the pattern (like a bar-code) is unique for every individual (except identical twins).

Outline: DNA is extracted, cut with restriction enzymes, the fragments separated by gel electrophoresis, transferred to a membrane (Southern blotting), hybridised with a labelled VNTR probe, and the pattern of bands is detected by autoradiography.
