Three types of RNA and their functions.

  1. Messenger RNA (mRNA). It is transcribed from the DNA of a gene and carries the coded genetic information (as a sequence of codons) from the nucleus to the ribosomes. It serves as the template for translation, deciding the sequence of amino acids in the protein.
  2. Transfer RNA (tRNA). A small clover-leaf-shaped 'adaptor' molecule. Each tRNA carries a specific amino acid and has an anticodon that pairs with the complementary codon on mRNA, thus bringing the correct amino acid to its proper place on the ribosome during protein synthesis. …
