Dominance: in a heterozygote the dominant allele masks the recessive (F₁ all dominant). Segregation: the paired alleles separate cleanly into different gametes, reappearing in F₂ as a 3:1 ratio.

Background. Mendel crossed pure-breeding pea plants differing in one trait (a monohybrid cross), e.g. tall (TT) × dwarf (tt).

Law of Dominance. A character is controlled by a pair of factors (alleles). When the two alleles are different (heterozygous, Tt), only one allele expresses its effect — the dominant (T, tall) — while the other, the recessive (t, dwarf), remains hidden. Hence the F₁ generation (Tt) is all tall, resembling only the dominant parent.
