Mendel's Law of Dominance: characters are controlled by paired factors (alleles); in a heterozygote the dominant allele is expressed and the recessive one is masked.

Concept: Gregor Mendel proposed the Law of Dominance from his experiments on garden pea (Pisum sativum).

Statements of the law:

  1. Characters are controlled by discrete units called factors (genes), which occur in pairs (alleles).
  2. When two contrasting factors (alleles) come together in a hybrid, only one expresses itself — the dominant allele — while the other, the recessive allele, remains unexpressed (hidden).
  3. Therefore the hybrid (F1F_1) resembles only the dominant parent in appearance.

Illustration (monohybrid cross):

  • Cross a pure Tall (TT) pea with a pure dwarf (tt) pea.
  • All F1F_1 plants are Tall (Tt) — the dominant allele T expresses itself and masks the recessive t. …
