Law of dominance: the dominant allele masks the recessive in the heterozygote (F₁ all dominant, F₂ 3:1). Incomplete dominance: the heterozygote is intermediate, so F₂ phenotype = genotype ratio 1:2:1 (e.g. pink 4-o'clock flower). (Main option of an OR choice.)

Mendel's Law of Dominance. When two homozygous individuals differing in a pair of contrasting characters (alleles) are crossed, the allele that expresses itself in the F₁ hybrid is the dominant allele and the one that remains hidden is the recessive allele. Thus:

  • Characters are controlled by discrete units called factors (alleles) which occur in pairs.
  • In a heterozygote (Tt) only the dominant character is expressed; the recessive is masked but not lost.
  • Example: Tall (TT) × Dwarf (tt) pea plants → all F₁ tall (Tt). On self-pollinating F₁, the dwarf trait reappears in F₂ in a 3 tall : 1 dwarf ratio, proving the recessive allele was merely hidden. The law explains why the F₁ resembles only one parent and why a recessive trait can reappear.

Incomplete dominance. This is an exception to the law of dominance. Here neither allele is completely dominant over the other, so the heterozygote shows an intermediate (in-between) phenotype — the effect looks 'blended'.

  • Classic example: the four-o'clock plant, Mirabilis jalapa (also Antirrhinum, snapdragon).
  • Cross red-flowered (RR) × white-flowered (rr) → F₁ all pink (Rr) — an intermediate colour, because one R allele cannot fully produce red pigment. …
