The two alleles of a character separate during gamete formation, each gamete receiving only one allele — Mendel's Law of Segregation.

Statement. The Law of Segregation (Mendel's first law, also called the Law of Purity of Gametes) states that the two members of a pair of alleles (factors) controlling a character separate (segregate) during the formation of gametes, so that each gamete receives only one allele of the pair. The alleles remain pure and do not mix or blend.

Basis / why. In a diploid organism alleles occur in pairs on homologous chromosomes. During meiosis the homologous chromosomes separate, so the two alleles pass into different gametes. At fertilisation, gametes fuse randomly, restoring pairs.
