Endosperm is the triploid nutritive tissue of a seed, formed by triple fusion; it develops (usually) by the nuclear type and feeds the developing embryo.

What is endosperm: The endosperm is the nutritive tissue present in the seed of angiosperms. It is formed as a result of double fertilisation — one male gamete fuses with the egg (forming the zygote), while the second male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei (or the secondary nucleus) of the central cell. This is called triple fusion, and the resulting cell (the primary endosperm cell) is triploid (3n).

Process of development: The primary endosperm nucleus (PEN) divides repeatedly to form the endosperm. There are three types:

  1. Nuclear type (most common): the PEN undergoes repeated free-nuclear divisions without wall formation first; cell walls form later (e.g. coconut — the coconut water is free-nuclear endosperm, the white kernel is cellular).
  2. Cellular type: each division is immediately followed by wall formation (e.g. Datura).
  3. Helobial type: intermediate between the two.
