(i) Dehydrogenation of a primary alcohol over hot copper removes H2 to give an aldehyde; (ii) nitration of phenol gives o-/p-nitrophenol (dilute acid) or picric acid (conc. acid); (iii) the methoxy group of anisole is o/p-directing, so Friedel-Crafts acylation gives mainly the para product.

(i) Dehydrogenation of a primary alcohol. When the vapour of a primary alcohol is passed over heated copper at ~573 K, a molecule of hydrogen is removed (dehydrogenation) and an aldehyde is formed:

R−CH2OH→  Cu,  573 K  R−CHO+H2R{-}CH_2OH \xrightarrow{\;Cu,\;573\,K\;} R{-}CHO + H_2

e.g. ethanol →\to acetaldehyde. (Secondary alcohols similarly give ketones; tertiary alcohols, having no α\alpha-H on the carbinol carbon, undergo dehydration instead.)

(ii) Nitration of phenol. The −OH-OH group is strongly activating and o/p-directing.

  • With dilute HNO3HNO_3 at low temperature: a mixture of o-nitrophenol and p-nitrophenol. C6H5OH→dil. HNO3o-O2N−C6H4−OH+p-O2N−C6H4−OHC_6H_5OH \xrightarrow{dil.\,HNO_3} o\text{-}O_2N{-}C_6H_4{-}OH + p\text{-}O_2N{-}C_6H_4{-}OH
  • With concentrated HNO3HNO_3 (excess): full nitration to 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid). C6H5OH→conc. HNO3(O2N)3C6H2OH  (picric acid)C_6H_5OH \xrightarrow{conc.\,HNO_3} (O_2N)_3C_6H_2OH \;(\text{picric acid}) …
