Adsorption of a gas on a solid depends on the surface area/nature of the adsorbent, the nature of the gas, the temperature, and the pressure.

Factors affecting the adsorption of gases on solids:

  1. Surface area and nature of the adsorbent: The greater the surface area of the solid (finely divided or porous materials such as charcoal, silica gel), the greater the adsorption.

  2. Nature of the gas: Gases that are more easily liquefied (higher critical temperature), such as SO2, NH3, CO2, are adsorbed to a greater extent than permanent gases like H2 or N2.

  3. Temperature: Physical adsorption is exothermic, so it decreases with an increase in temperature. (Chemisorption may first increase and then decrease with temperature.)
