True solutions have sub-nanometre particles and show no Tyndall effect; colloids have 1-1000 nm particles and show the Tyndall effect.

Two distinguishing characteristics:

  1. Particle size: In a true solution the dispersed particles (ions/molecules) are smaller than 1 nm, so the mixture is a single homogeneous phase. In a colloidal solution the particles are in the range 1-1000 nm.

  2. Optical behaviour (Tyndall effect): A true solution is optically clear and does not scatter a beam of light. A colloidal solution scatters light and shows the Tyndall effect, so the path of light becomes visible.
