Slag is the easily fusible product formed when a flux reacts with the gangue in an ore during smelting, e.g. CaO + SiO2 -> CaSiO3.

Ores contain earthy, infusible impurities called gangue. To remove them a suitable substance called a flux is added during smelting; the flux chemically combines with the gangue to form a low-melting, fusible material called slag, which floats over the molten metal and can be removed.
