Ostwald process plant for the manufacture of nitric acid (HNO3)
Ostwald process plant for the manufacture of nitric acid (HNO3)

HNO3 by Ostwald process (catalytic oxidation of NH3). Conc HNO3 oxidises C to CO2, H2S to S, and I2 to HIO3, itself being reduced to NO2.

Manufacture of nitric acid (Ostwald process):

Ammonia is catalytically oxidised, then the oxides of nitrogen are converted to the acid in three steps:

Step 1 - Catalytic oxidation of ammonia over a platinum-rhodium gauze at about 500 K and 9 bar:

4NH3 + 5O2 --(Pt/Rh)--> 4NO + 6H2O

Step 2 - Nitric oxide is oxidised by air to nitrogen dioxide (on cooling):

2NO + O2 -> 2NO2

Step 3 - Nitrogen dioxide is absorbed in water (in the presence of air) to give nitric acid:

3NO2 + H2O -> 2HNO3 + NO

(the NO formed is recycled).

(Diagram description, since it cannot be drawn here: NH3 and air are mixed and passed over a heated Pt/Rh catalyst gauze in a converter; the hot gases (NO) are cooled in a heat exchanger and mixed with more air to form NO2, which is then passed up an absorption tower down which water trickles, giving dilute HNO3 at the base. The essential parts are the catalyst converter, the cooler/oxidation chamber, and the water absorption tower.)
