Aluminothermic (thermite) process: Al reduces a less-active metal's oxide in a strongly exothermic reaction, e.g. Cr2O3 + 2Al -> Al2O3 + 2Cr.

Aluminium has a very high affinity for oxygen, so it can reduce the oxides of many metals (Cr, Mn, Fe) to the free metal. The reaction is highly exothermic, and the heat evolved keeps the liberated metal molten.

Cr2O3 + 2Al -> Al2O3 + 2Cr + heat
