Hall-Heroult electrolytic cell for obtaining pure aluminium from alumina
Hall-Heroult electrolytic cell for obtaining pure aluminium from alumina

Hall-Heroult process: electrolyse Al2O3 dissolved in molten cryolite (+CaF2) at ~950 C; cathode Al^3+ + 3e- -> Al, anode C + O^2- -> CO/CO2. Alloys: Duralumin (aircraft) and Magnalium (light frames).

Extraction of pure aluminium from alumina (Hall-Heroult electrolytic process):

Pure alumina (Al2O3) has a very high melting point (about 2050 C), so it is dissolved in molten cryolite (Na3AlF6) along with some fluorspar (CaF2). This lowers the melting point to about 950 C and makes the melt a good conductor.

The electrolytic cell is a large steel tank lined with carbon (graphite), which acts as the cathode; thick carbon (graphite) rods dipping into the melt act as the anode.

(Diagram description, since it cannot be drawn here: a rectangular carbon-lined steel tank containing the molten Al2O3-cryolite mixture; the carbon lining is the cathode, carbon rods dipping from above are the anodes; molten aluminium collects at the bottom and is tapped off. The essential features are the carbon cathode lining, the carbon anodes, and the molten cryolite bath at ~950 C.)

Electrode reactions:

At the cathode: Al^3+ + 3e- -> Al (molten aluminium, denser, settles at the bottom and is removed). …
