Transition (d-block) elements have the general electronic configuration (n−1)d1−10ns0−2(n-1)d^{1-10}ns^{0-2} and characteristically show variable oxidation states, coloured ions, complex formation, catalytic behaviour and paramagnetism.

General electronic configuration. Transition elements are the d-block elements in which the last electron enters the penultimate (n−1) d-subshell:

(n−1)d1−10 ns0−2(n-1)d^{1-10}\,ns^{0-2}

(e.g. Fe: [Ar]3d64s2[Ar]3d^{6}4s^{2}). Their partly filled d-orbitals are the source of their special properties.

Three characteristic properties:

  1. Variable oxidation states. Because the (n−1)d(n-1)d and nsns electrons have similar energies, both take part in bonding, so a transition element shows several oxidation states (e.g. Mn shows +2 to +7; Fe shows +2 and +3).

  2. Formation of coloured ions. Their ions have partly filled d-orbitals; d–d electronic transitions absorb visible light, so the ions are coloured (e.g. Cu2+Cu^{2+} blue, MnO4−MnO_4^- purple, Cr3+Cr^{3+} green).
