Transition elements have incompletely filled dd-orbitals in the atom or a stable ion; the first series runs Sc→\toZn with configuration [Ar]3d1−104s1−2[Ar]3d^{1-10}4s^{1-2}. Unpaired dd-electrons make most of them paramagnetic.

Definition: A transition element is one which has a partially filled dd-subshell in its ground state or in one of its common oxidation states. They lie in the dd-block, between the ss- and pp-blocks.

Elements and electronic configurations of the first transition series ([Ar]=1s22s22p63s23p6[Ar] = 1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^6):

ElementSymbolConfiguration
ScandiumSc[Ar]3d14s2[Ar]3d^{1}4s^{2}
TitaniumTi[Ar]3d24s2[Ar]3d^{2}4s^{2}
VanadiumV[Ar]3d34s2[Ar]3d^{3}4s^{2}
ChromiumCr[Ar]3d54s1[Ar]3d^{5}4s^{1}
ManganeseMn[Ar]3d54s2[Ar]3d^{5}4s^{2}
IronFe[Ar]3d64s2[Ar]3d^{6}4s^{2}
CobaltCo[Ar]3d74s2[Ar]3d^{7}4s^{2}
NickelNi[Ar]3d84s2[Ar]3d^{8}4s^{2}
CopperCu[Ar]3d104s1[Ar]3d^{10}4s^{1}
ZincZn[Ar]3d104s2[Ar]3d^{10}4s^{2}

(Cr and Cu take the 4s14s^1 configuration because half-filled 3d53d^5 and fully-filled 3d103d^{10} shells are extra stable.)
