The steady shrinkage of size along the lanthanoid series (poor 4f4f shielding) makes the 4d and 5d transition metals of a group nearly identical in size and makes the lanthanoids hard to separate.

What it is. As we move across the lanthanoids from La to Lu, the extra electron enters the deep-lying 4f4f subshell. The 4f4f electrons shield the outer electrons from the nucleus very poorly, so the effective nuclear charge felt by the valence electrons increases steadily. This pulls the electron cloud inward, and the atomic and ionic radii decrease regularly across the whole series. This gradual overall contraction is the lanthanoid contraction.

Effects (consequences).

  1. Similarity of 4d and 5d elements. The contraction almost exactly cancels the expected size increase from period 5 to period 6, so pairs like Zr–Hf, Nb–Ta and Mo–W have nearly identical sizes and very similar properties, making them hard to separate. …
