Transformer = mutual induction between two coils on a common soft-iron core; the turns ratio sets the voltage ratio. A step-up transformer has more secondary turns, so it raises the voltage.

Principle. A transformer transfers AC electrical energy from one circuit to another by mutual induction. Alternating current in the primary coil sets up a continuously changing magnetic flux; a laminated soft-iron core confines this flux so that (ideally) all of it links the secondary coil, inducing an alternating emf in it.

Working of a step-up transformer.

  • Primary (NpN_p turns) is connected to the AC input; secondary (NsN_s turns) delivers the output, with Ns>NpN_s>N_p.
  • The alternating primary current makes the core flux ϕ\phi change with time. The emf induced per turn, −dϕdt-\dfrac{d\phi}{dt}, is the same for both coils, so VsVp=NsNp=k (>1 for step-up).\frac{V_s}{V_p}=\frac{N_s}{N_p}=k\ (>1\ \text{for step-up}).
  • Since Ns>NpN_s>N_p, the output voltage Vs>VpV_s>V_p — the voltage is stepped up. …
