Drift velocity: In the absence of a field, free electrons in a conductor move randomly with zero average velocity. When a potential difference is applied, an electric field E = V/L acts on them, and between collisions (average time τ, the relaxation time) they gain a small net velocity along the wire called the drift velocity:

v_d = eEτ/m = e(V/L)τ/m.

Derivation of Ohm's law: The current is

I = n e A v_d,

where n = number density of free electrons, A = cross-sectional area. Substituting v_d:
