Fission splits a heavy nucleus into medium nuclei; fusion joins light nuclei into a heavier one. Both move nuclei toward the maximum of the binding-energy-per-nucleon curve, so both release energy.

Nuclear fission. A heavy nucleus (e.g. 92235U^{235}_{92}U) absorbs a slow neutron and splits into two medium-mass nuclei plus a few neutrons, releasing large energy:

92235U+01n⟶56141Ba+3692Kr+3 01n+Q  (≈200 MeV).^{235}_{92}U+{}^1_0n\longrightarrow{}^{141}_{56}Ba+{}^{92}_{36}Kr+3\,^1_0n+Q\;(\approx200\ \text{MeV}).

The extra neutrons can trigger a chain reaction (basis of reactors and the atom bomb).

Nuclear fusion. Two light nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, again releasing energy:

12H+13H⟶24He+01n+Q  (≈17.6 MeV).^2_1H+{}^3_1H\longrightarrow{}^4_2He+{}^1_0n+Q\;(\approx17.6\ \text{MeV}).

Fusion needs very high temperature and pressure (to overcome Coulomb repulsion) and powers the Sun and stars.
