Sports training is the planned, scientific preparation of an athlete for peak performance, governed by principles such as overload, progression, individual differences, recovery and specificity — each of which, if ignored, limits gains or causes injury.

Concept of sports training. Sports training is a planned, systematic and scientific process of preparing an athlete — physically, technically, tactically and mentally — to reach and sustain the highest level of performance. It is goal-directed and follows scientific principles that govern how the body improves.

Five principles and what happens if each is ignored:

  1. Principle of overload. The load must be raised beyond the body's current capacity to force adaptation. If ignored (load never increased), the body is never challenged, so improvement stops (plateau).

  2. Principle of progression. The overload must be added gradually, in small planned steps. If ignored (load raised too fast or suddenly), the body cannot cope, leading to injury and over-training.

  3. Principle of individual differences. Training must be matched to each athlete's age, sex, ability and recovery rate. If ignored (same plan for everyone), the load is too little for some (no progress) and too much for others (injury or breakdown).

  4. Principle of recovery. Adequate rest and recovery must follow load so adaptation can occur. If ignored (no rest days, no sleep), fatigue accumulates, performance falls and the athlete slides into over-training and injury. …
