The endoplasmic reticulum forms a network of small tube-like structures spread through the cytoplasm, and it takes two distinct forms depending on whether ribosomes are present on its outer surface.

Rough endoplasmic reticulum carries ribosomes attached to its outer face, which is what gives it its characteristically rough appearance under the microscope. This form is especially extensive in cells that are heavily engaged in making and secreting proteins, and it remains continuous with the outer membrane of the nucleus.
