Axile and free central placentation both place ovules on a central axis, but axile placentation occurs within a multilocular ovary divided by septa, while free central placentation occurs in a single, undivided chamber with no septa at all.

Placentation describes how ovules are arranged within the ovary, and both these two types share the feature of a central placental axis, which is why they can be confused at first glance.
