Concept understanding — where the meso cycle sits
Periodisation nests three cycles inside one another. The whole system exists so that training load can be progressively increased and periodically recovered from, and so that peak form arrives on the day it is needed.
| Cycle | Duration | Made of | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro cycle | ~1 week (3–10 days) | Individual sessions | Day-to-day load–recovery rhythm |
| Meso cycle | 3 to 6 weeks | Several micro cycles | Achieve one specific training objective |
| Macro cycle | 1 year / season | Several meso cycles | Peak for the main competition |
Micro = small = a week. Meso = middle = a month or so (3–6 weeks). Macro = large = a year. The Greek prefixes tell you the size; you only have to remember one duration each.
Why 3 to 6 weeks?
The length is not arbitrary — it is set by physiology:
- Adaptation takes time. A single hard week does not build a strength base or lift aerobic capacity. Repeated, progressively loaded weeks do. Roughly three to six weeks of consistent, focused work is what it takes for a measurable adaptation to appear — the muscle to enlarge, the heart to become more efficient, the movement to become automatic.
- One goal at a time. A meso cycle carries a single main emphasis, because chasing several qualities at once dilutes all of them. A middle-distance runner's season might read: an aerobic base meso cycle → a strength endurance meso cycle → a speed/race-pace meso cycle → a competition/taper meso cycle.
- It must end with recovery. The load is usually raised across the first micro cycles and then dropped in a final unloading (recovery) micro cycle, so that the accumulated fatigue clears and the adaptation is expressed. A typical 4-week meso cycle is therefore load → more load → most load → unload.
The meso cycle is the level at which a coach reviews and adjusts. It is long enough to have produced a result worth testing, and short enough that a mistaken emphasis can still be corrected inside the season. Progress tests are usually scheduled at the end of a meso cycle for exactly this reason.
Refuting the other options
- (a) A single day. A day is a training day or session — the raw material out of which a micro cycle is built. It is not a cycle at all: no load-and-recovery pattern can be completed within it, and no adaptation can be measured from it.
- (b) 3 to 10 days. This is the micro cycle — the shortest unit, about a week. Confusing it with the meso cycle is the single most common error in this topic. Keep the ladder straight: micro = 3–10 days, meso = 3–6 weeks. …
