Reduce pollution by: electrostatic precipitators/scrubbers/catalytic converters for air; sewage & effluent treatment plants for water; segregation, composting & recycling (reduce–reuse–recycle) for solid waste; cleaner fuels, public transport, renewable energy; and afforestation.

[!NOTE]

Environmental pollution control is from the Environmental Issues chapter, which is not part of the current rationalised NCERT/CBSE-aligned Class-12 syllabus. It is answered here in full for completeness; the nearest retained chapter is Ecosystem.

Concept

Pollution is any undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air, water or soil. It is controlled both by law (e.g. the Air and Water Acts) and by technological and personal measures.

Measures — by type

Air pollution:

  • Install electrostatic precipitators (remove up to ~99% of particulate matter from smoke) and scrubbers (remove gases like SO2SO_2) in factory chimneys.
  • Fit vehicles with catalytic converters (with platinum–palladium–rhodium) to convert harmful gases (CO, unburnt hydrocarbons, NOxNO_x) into harmless ones; use unleaded petrol/CNG.

Water pollution:

  • Treat domestic sewage in Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and industrial effluents in Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) before discharge.
  • Avoid dumping wastes and excess fertilisers/pesticides into water bodies.
