Seminiferous tubule contains the germ cells (spermatogonia → spermatocytes → spermatids → sperms) plus Sertoli & Leydig cells; spermatogenesis: spermatogonium (2n) → 1° spermatocyte (2n) → meiosis → 2° spermatocytes (n) → 4 spermatids (n) → sperms. OR: double fertilisation = syngamy (2n zygote) + triple fusion (3n PEN), occurring in angiosperms.

Concept (क & ख): The testis is packed with highly coiled seminiferous tubules, the site of sperm production.

(क) Sectional view (labels to show): the tubule wall is lined by germinal epithelium — from outside in: spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes, secondary spermatocytes, spermatids and sperms projecting into the lumen. Large Sertoli cells provide nourishment to developing germ cells; between the tubules lie the Leydig (interstitial) cells that secrete testosterone.

(ख) Spermatogenesis:

  1. Begins at puberty. The diploid spermatogonia (2n) on the inside wall multiply by mitosis.
  2. Some enlarge into primary spermatocytes (2n).
  3. Each primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis I to form two haploid secondary spermatocytes (n).
  4. These undergo meiosis II to give four haploid spermatids (n).
  5. The spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperms) by the process of spermiogenesis. The process is controlled by GnRH → FSH and LH; LH acts on Leydig cells (testosterone) and FSH acts on Sertoli cells.

OR — Double fertilisation:

It is a distinctive event of angiosperms (flowering plants) in which two fusion events occur in the embryo sac. After the pollen tube discharges two male gametes:

  • One male gamete fuses with the egg cell — syngamy — forming the diploid zygote (2n).
  • The other male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei of the central cell — triple fusion — forming the triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN, 3n). Since two fusions (syngamy + triple fusion) take place, it is called double fertilisation. …
